In Germany, a study conducted by the Heidelberger Institute for energy and environmental research found that ethanol produced at the Verbio BioEnergie sites in Schwedt/Oder and Zörbig save 80 percent on CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuels. The Zorbig plant recorded the highest (80 percent) savings because residues from the plant are used for biogas production. Verbio noted that German government action on subsidies and mandates had idled up to 50 percent of German biofuel production capacity.
