In Washington, the US Environmental Protection Agency officially raised the 2009 Renewable Fuel Standard to 10.21 percent, or 11.1 billion gallons of ethanol, compared to 7.76 percent or 9 billion gallons in 2008. Tne Renewable Fuel Standard is scheduled for annual increases until it reaches 36 billion gallons of ethanol in 2022.
There are 160 companies now producing ethanol in the US, up from 57 in the comparable period last fall, according to United Press International.
