Taiwan researchers discover more powerful wastewater treating, electricity producing bacterium

In Taiwan, researchers at the National Taiwan Ocean University announced that they have discovered a  new bacterium, Shewanella decolorationis NTOU1, that treats wastewater while generating as much as six times more electricity than the commonly-used Shewanella putrefaciens ATCC8071T. Leyte Agri Corp partners with Praj, launches first Philippine ethanol plant

In the Philippines, Leyte Agri Corp announced a partnership with India’s Praj Industries to develop a 2 Mgy sugarcane ethanol plant, and said that the company has already commenced distilling operations. KL Energy achieves 56% lift in glucose recovery for cellulosic ethanol production, reduces enzyme rate 22%

In South Dakota, KL Energy announced that it has been able to increase its overall glucose recovery rate by 56% per dry ton of wood while simultaneously reducing its enzyme rate by 22%. Mozambique’s Principle Energy goes forward with $290 million ethanol plant

In Mozambique, Principle Energy confirmed its plans to commence construction of its proposed $290 million ethanol plant near Dombe. The company raised $70 million in 2007, but has pushed back a scheduled capital raise of $90 million to 2009 because of the economic market dislocations.

Canada’s Intergrated Grain Processors Co-operative ethanol plant

In Canada, the Integrated Grain Processors Co-operative ethanol plant at  Aylmer, Quebec has commended production. The $140 million 55 Mgy ethanol plant will have its official grand opening in December.

Minnesota’s Sen. Norm Coleman aims to incorporate Rural Renaissance plan with Obama energy and economic stimulus legislation

U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman said that he hopes to incorporate provisions of his Rural Renaissance plan into the overall investment in renewable energy and the economic stimulus legislation mooted for early next year.

Air New Zealand confirms for next week’s historic biofuels 747 test

In New Zealand, Air New Zealand confirmed that arrangements were complete for the December 3rd biodiesel-powered 747 test flight. The engine is believed to be using palm oil, and one engine will have a B40 mix for the test flight over the Hauraki Gulf, out of Auckland.

Iowa’s Hawkeye Renewables keps to normal schedules despite price, market upheavals

In Iowa, Hawkeye Renewables confirmed that it is operating its plants under normal schedules, despite the lock up in the credit markets and the falling prices of ethanol and corn. Hawkeye has four ethanol plants in Iowa.
