MIT report identifies 68 billion gallon US savings by 2035 from hybrids

In Massachusetts, a team of MIT researchers have calculated that the US would save 68 billion gallons of gasoline per year by 2035, or nearly half of its annual gas consumption, by deploying lightweight hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The group issued a report with near-term and long-term recommendations, including increased focus on fuel efficiency over performance in the next 15 years, with a target of deploying hydrogen fuel cell cars and hybrids en mass between 2023 and 2038. The report calls for the development of more environmentally neutral biofuels, and commentaed that biofuels growth would be less than expected.
