The European Parliament’s environment committee has approved measures to increase the severity of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme as of 2013. The policy revision will reduce free emission allowances to 80 percent of emissions caps for selected industries, including aviation, in 2012, with a goal of eliminating all free carbon allowances by 2020. The International Air Carrier Association (IACA) issued a loud protest over the sceheme, which would place increased cost on the aviation industry unless they can speed up a transition to emissions-reducing fuels, including biofuels.
