FAO celebrates World Food Day with focus on climate change, bioenergy; report released on biofuels
In Italy, the FAO will celebrate World Food Day on October 16, with a focus on climate change and bioenergy. FAO assistant Director-General Alexander Mueller said “Hundreds of millions of small-scale farmers, fishers and forest-dependent people will be worst hit by climate change. Adaptation strategies, especially for the most vulnerable poor countries, where most of the over 920 million hungry people live, need to be urgently developed, reviewing land use plans, food security programs, fisheries and forestry policies to protect the poor from climate change.”
As a part of the week’s activities, the EU and FAO have organized a conference on the global food crisis. Earlier this month, the FAO called for a global review of biofuels policies, and released a report here.
