Description: Designed more like a fortress of non-information than a public company, Chevron nevertheless has some interesting activities underway in advanced biofuels.

The company’s activity has been primarily Chevron Technology Ventures, which signed a development deals with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in October 2007 for research into jet fuel from algae; the company also partnered with Solazyme in January 2008 on undisclosed terms aimed at accelerating Solzyme’s development path. CTV also funded a five-year, $25 million project at the University of California, Davis for biofuels research; and a five year, $12 million deal with Georgia Tech; both agreements were signed in 2006.

The major agreement signed to date is the formation of the Catchlight Energy joint venture between Chevron and Weyerhaeuser in February 2008. Catchlight’s initial focus is reported as “developing and demonstrating novel technologies for converting cellulose and lignin from a variety of sources into biofuels.” It’s essentially a wood-based cellulosic ethanol R&D effort.

Meanwhile, the company has found itself criticized in summer 2008 for distributing a high percentage of biodiesel in the UK obtained from non-sustainable sources. That report came from the UK’s Renewable Fuel Agency.
