Description: Bodega Algae first appeared on the algae fuel radar last year, when the company reached the semi-finals of a MIT start-up competition. Subsequently, the venture was named one of “15 start-ups to watch” by Treehugger, and was profiled in Mass High Tech Journal.

The company develops microalgae photobioreactors. As with Bionavitas, the company’s focus is on proprietary optical systems that optimize the distribution of sunlight. Company COO Joe Dahmen has said that the technology will double the output from an open pond system, and achieve up to nine times the production rate of a closed photobioreactor system.

The company has “provisionally patented” (i.e. applied) a closed inddor productin system that can make indoor production more economically efficient. It is not clear whether this generation of the company’s technology can make indoor production commercially viable, or at commercial scale.

The company has commenced testing at the Friday Harbor Laboratories of the University of Washington, and will present at the Algal Biomass Summit in October in Seattle.
