| Description: | A new and somewhat mysterious entrant into algae biofuels, Blue Marble Energy finds itself in the Pacific Northwest hotbed of advanced biofuels activity, along with companies such as Inventure Chemicals, Bionavitas and the Algal Biomass Organization.
Counting industry insiders like Mont Vista Capital and Wilson Sonsini among their supporters, and former Washington governor Gary Locke on their advisory board, they are well positioned within the industry, though no production figures have been announced as of October 2008. Like New Zealand’s Aquaflow Bionomic and Bionavitas, Blue Marble focuses on growing algae in wastewater — with a two-step business model of wastewater remediation and making fuel, protein or nutraceuticals from the resultant algae biomass. The company recently acquired the Washington state Department of Ecology as a client, with a wild algae harvesting project. The company plans to use anaerobic digesters to recover methane and industrial chemicals, then gasify the remainder to create biocrude. |
