In North Dakota, the Energy & Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota has signed an agreement with Great Plains -The Camelina Company to produce jet fuel from camelina. The EERC has developed a feedstock-flexible process to produce jet fuel, diesel, gasoline, and propane. The EERC and Great Plains will utilize camelina oil for upcoming testing and are planning to develop an initial full-scale refinery focused on renewable jet fuel production. Camelina is a non-food feedstock that can be grown in rotation with wheat. Research has shown that a wheat-camelina-wheat rotation improves yields compared to a wheat-fallow-wheat rotation, making camelina a “food plus fuel” option.
