In Brazil, the nation’s largest sugar and ethanol cooperative, Copersucar, announced that it had converted from co-op to a company and would increase production by 200 percent over the next ten years. With the conversion, Copersucar becomes the largest sugar and ethanol producing company in the country. The co-op formerly was composed of 33 sugar and ethanol mills in Sao Paulo, Parana and Minas Gerais states, and controls 5 percent of the world sugar trade. Mill owners will become shareholders in the new giant.
