Bush (41) and Clinton announce Coastal Fund to aid recovery from Hurricane Ike: “progress on energy efficiency depends on swift recovery,” says Clinton
Former President George H. W. Bush and Clinton announced a new partnership to add recovery for hurricane affected regions of the Gulf Coast. Former Secretary of State Jim Baker will chair the effort. The coastal and near-inland communities of Texas and Louisiana are home to the second largest biodiesel production region, home to the National Algae Association, and Houston will be host in March for the KEMA Executive Forum on Clean Energy which will be co-organized by Biofuels Digest and Clean Energy Markets editor Jim Lane.
The former presidents made the annoucenment of the bushclintoncoastalfund.org website at the 4th annual Clinton Global Initiative meetings in New York. “This is a coveted invititation,”: said former President Bush, who was a surprise guest. “I didn’t think I was going to get in, but then I saaid I was a friend of Bono’s and everything seemed to go fine.” Bono, lead singer of U2 and founder of ONE, was a featured speaker at the Initiative’s opening session.
President Clinton remarked that although the Gulf Coast is associated with the fossil fuel industries, the city of Houston recently passed a building-based energy efficiency standard that is second in North America only to Vancouver. He said that progress on energy efficiency was critically dependent on a swift recovery from the Hurricane Ike.
