SEKAB to invest $300 million in Tanzanian sugarcane ethanol; Sun Biofuels to plant 5500 hectares of jatropha near Dar es Salaam
In Tanzania, Svensk Etanolkemi of Sweden (SEKAB) said that it will invest $300 million to construct a 26 Mgy sugarcane ethanol plant near Bagamoyo, 50 miles north of Dar es Salaam. The company said that it is awaiting permits to plant up to 49,000 acres of sugar cane in the region surrounding the proposed plant. The company said that it has applied for permits to plant an additional 494,000 hectares in the eastern district of Rufiji, and 240,000 acres in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province. IUn other news, Sun Biofuels said that the company is near to acquiring 19,000 acres west of Dar es Salaam, and would plant 13,000 acres of jatropha over a six year period.
