In California, leading rendering company Darling International has proposed a tallow-based biodiesel plant at the company’s San Francisco waterfront area, with a proposed capacity of up to 10 Mgy. Biodiesel from the plant would power up to 1500 buses for San Francisco Muni. The project is a first for Darling, which had become the largest exporter in San Francisco based on the flow of animal wastes and fats through its tallow facility that processes residues from restaurants, meatpackers, dairies and butchers. Project cost is projected at up to $10 million.
