The USDA has awarded $1 million to a research team from North Carolina State University to develop genetically modified trees for ethanol production. The target trees were not indicated but poplar is typically the most popular tree feedstock for ethanol. Meanwhile, Oregon State received two grants for $2.4 million to study poplar tree genetics, while another will investigate brachypodium, a relative of grass which is a target feedstock for cellulosic ethanol.
