The Associated Press ran an excellent summary of the state of aviation biofuels, including efforts to utilize synthetic diesel produced from clean coal as well as biodiesel made from jatropha and palm oil. The summary highlights efforts to develop aviation-grade synfuels at American Clean Coal Fuels, Baard Energy, Rentech. The South African state oil company, Sasol, has been producing synfuel blends for South African Airways for many years, dating back to efforts to circumvents oil embargoes imposed during th apartheid era.
