In Washington state, Allied Minds and the University of Washington have established a new technology venture, AXI, to develop new algae strains for biofuel production. The new venture will commercialize research by University of Washington professor Rose Ann Cattolico, and is named after the “Algae X” species named by Prof. Cattolico. The new venture is currently based near Boston, where Allied Minds has invested in numerous university technology spin-offs. The company will focus its research on algae strains with a high lipid content and low carbon dioxide requirements.
