In California, new reports of rampant grease theft have surfaced from Sacramento to the Oregon border. North State Rendering, which collects restaurant grease, say that grease thieves in northern California are siphoning up to 50,000 pounds of grease per month, representing $180,000 in annual theft. In fact, despite an annual national grease theft bill in the millions of dollars and increased reports of organized crime activity, few arrests have been reported. Grease thieves are using suction pumps and tanks loaded onto pickup, and are cutting holes in tanks to siphon grease if padlocks are used .
