The US International Trade Commission said that U.S. and foreign government support for the development and adoption of industrial biotechnology would remove barriers to growth for the biofuel and pharmaceutical industries, in a report prepared at the request of the United States Senate on the growth of industrial biotechnology and the role of public policy. The report found that ethanol and biodiesel production were the major catalysts for industrial biotechnology growth at this time, although the pharmaceutical industry remained the largest sector using industrial biotechnologies.
