In Brazil, the Union of Sugarcane Industries (Unica) said that nine Brazilian states had recorded 100 percent increases in ethanol fuel consumption in the first five months of 2008 compared to the same period in 2007. Consumption in Mato Grosso state soared 220 percent during the period to 4.6 million gallons. Unica said that the 65 percent differential between the price of ethanol and gasoline is driving the increases.
