Brazilian sugar production down 25 percent, ethanol 20 percent, says UNICA
In Brazil, the Union of Sugar Industries (Unica) said that sugar production is expected to drop 25 percent this season compared to last year, at 1.63 million metric tons. Ethanol production will fall 20.2 percent for the season to 470 million gallons. 64 percent of the Brazilian sugar crop will be converted to ethanol. Wet weather, reduced yields per hectare, and reduced yields of sugar per ton of sugarcane were all cited as causes for the drop.
