The University of Michigan, Michigan State and Wayne State awarded $800,000 for “revolutionary but feasible” alternative energy projects. One project proposes to convert 10-15 percent of tailpipe heat to electricity, noting that more than 70 percent of gasoline energy is wasted as heat. A second grant will support the development of new enzymes that will reduce reaction temperature and time required to convert wood waste and switchgrass to ethanol.
