AgRefresh verifies 83,363 tonnes of dairy carbon offset credits in waste-to-energy programs

May 22, 2008

AgRefresh announced that they had verified 83,363 tonnes of carbon offsets, produced by dairy farmers undertaking waste-to-energy projects. The projects in the AgRefersh programs captured methane and generated 12,000 MWh from biomass. The carbon offsets have been branded Pure Farm Energy Verified Emission Reductions and will be marketed by Agrefresh. At $15 per ton, the credits have a street value of more than $1.2 million.

In Malaysia, Carbon Capital will launch $60 million in biogas and biomass projects in Sarawak, including a 10 megawatt biomass power plant using palm fruit waste, and four biogas projects. The company specializes in projects built under the Clean Development Mechanism, which offsets traditional fossil fuel usage in other parts of the world with investments in emissions-reducing projects, many in developing countries.

In other carbon offset news, Carbon Green said it expects to significantly increase carbon credit grants for US ethanol plants, following the first grant of credits to the 44 Mgy Corn Plus facility in Minnesota. Carbon Green execs said that ethanol significantly reduces the 21 pounds of carbon released per gallon of gasoline, and that this reduction will eventually be eligible for credits.

In addition, the company said that US biofuels plants will be able to earn and trade carbon credits for the reduction of fossil fuel emissions during their production process. The Corn Plus plant in Minnesota burns corn syrup to offset fossil fuel use, and uses two wind turbines for electricity.
