The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and the Florida Wildlife Federation announced a new campaign called the “Faces of Climate Change in Florida” campaign that will feature algal oil producer PetroAlgae and cellulosic ethanol producer Green Circle BioEnergy, among others. The campaign includes a TV ad buy in Florida as well as events in Florida and DC. According to PetroAlgae, “the recent food vs. fuels debate has detracted from legitimate alternative fuels such as algal oil and cellulosic ethanol, among others, that don’t compete with the food supply yet still help in the fight against global warming and energy independence. Campaigns such as those being led by EDF are critical in communicating the alternatives to corn and soy.” The campaign launches just as it was revealed that the author of the Science magazine article on land-use conversion, Timothy Searchinger, that launched a global biofuels backlash, is not a trained scientist but a former attorney with the EDF.
