In Texas, Gulf Ethanol announced that it will “discontinue” use of food-based feedstocks, and will switch to sorghum and switchgrass. “We won’t burn your food,” President J.T. Cloud said. “The answer to rising fuel prices is not to run away from alternative energy production. It is to move rapidly toward the use of non-food feedstocks that are abundant and cheap.” The company had targeted sorghum as of last summer, leading observers to suggest that this week’s announcement represents a marketing ploy rather than a change in strategy.
In Arizona, the Chandler Planning & Zoning Commission has shut down the state’s leading commercial-scale biodiesel plant, AZ Biodiesel, for code and safety violations. The company, which collects waste vegetable oil from 143 locations in Arizona, said it was caught unawares by the shutdown and was given no prior notice of safety or code concerns. Local resident complaints may have led to the withdrawal of the company’s use permits.
In California, Novozymes has projected that US production of cellulosic ethanol will exceed first-generation biofuels by 2022.
