CORNE proposes 40 Mgy corn ethanol plant for Elkton, Indiana
In Indiana, the Corporate Organization for Renewable Natural Energy (CORNE) announced plans to construct a 40 Mgy corn ethanol and biodiesel plant near Elkton. The company said that construction of the plant, restaurant and medical facility would cost $72.5 million and would take the place of an abandoned fertilizer plant.
Indiana continues to be a major center for biofuels-related development. Last month, the Vigo County Area Plan Commission approved a rezoning of a 237-acre site for POET Energy’s proposed 115 Mgy corn ethanol plant in Farmersburg. The company will take a projected 18 months to complete construction.
On the biodiesel side, Xenerga will open a 5 Mgy biodiesel plant in LaPorte next month, as a joint venture with Indiana Flex Fuels. Xenerga targets small regional plants, recruits a local investor vase, secures permitting, constructs the plant and trains the staff. The plants use waste oils and animal fats as feedstocks, and distribute product locally to reduce transportation and logistics issues.
Earlier this month, Green Fuels has proposed a 20 Mgy biodiesel plant on a 32-acre site in Fulton County, Indiana. The company has requested a rezoning hearing with the County to advance the project. The proposed feedstock for the new facility was not disclosed.
