Wisconsin 10 percent renewables mandate fails to pass, as oil companies protest

February 1, 2008

In Wisconsin, a bill calling for 10 percent of all fuel sold in the state to come from renewable resources, and increasing to 25 percent in 2025, has been sent back to committee following protests from oil companies and legislators opposed to fuel subsidies. The bill has broad bipartisan support, and was supported by the state Governor in his State of the State speech.

NewPage Corporation this week received a $30 million award from the Department of Energy for a demonstration-scale cellulosic ethanol plant in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. NewPage Corporation of Miamisburg, Ohio, recently acquired Stora Enso North America, the original applicant for the funding opportunity. New Page’s partners include: TRI; Syntroleum; Oak Ridge National Laboratory; and the Alabama Center for Paper and Bioresource Engineering at Auburn University.
