Husky Energy completes plant expansion in Manitoba, from 4 to 34 Mgy
In Canada, Husky Energy will commence production in February at its expanded ethanol plant in Minnedosa, Manitoba. The plant will now produce 34 Mgy of ethanol, compared to 4 million at the previous incarnation of the facility.
Manitoba has been out in front of most of Canada in biofuels development. It was passage of the 2003 Biofuels Act in the province that convinced Husky to expand its ethanol facilities.
A 5 percent ethanol mandate commenced in Manitoba on January 1, 2008. The province expects to increase the mandate to 8.5 percent by April 1, 2008. The mandate is not expected to affect consumers in the pocketbook, due to the low price of ethanol.
Manitoba recently introduced biofuels legislation that would establish biodiesel fuel quality standards and establish the framework for a biodiesel mandate.
Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba, is the largest Canadian city to date to trial biodiesel in city buses.
