UN Conference on Climate Change ends; biofuels remarkably not a major agenda item

In Indonesia, the UN Conference on Climate Change in Bali has ended. Striking to observers was the low level of interest in first-generation biofuels or biofuel discussions. No major discussions or addresses were scheduled on first-generation biofuels.

Late last week, following extended boos and jeers from the delegates, the United States relented on its opposition to language regarding emission reduction targets, allowing the conference to set a time and agenda for negotiating a successor to the Kyoto Treaty. EU officials had threatened a boycott of next month’s Washington conference on climate change over US intransigence.
The final text from the Bali Conference softened initial targets to require that emissions peak no later than 2022 and fall 50 percent by 2050.
