Nigerian ethanol plant announced in Niger State for 2009
In Nigeria, it was reported that Niger State Government has inked a $314 million pact with OSPREY Investment for an ethanol plant. The plant is scheduled to be operational in 2009. Niger State would hold a 25 percent stake in the venture.
The announcment continues the steady expansion of the Nigerian ethanol industry. In September, Alconi Nigeria announced a new ethanol plant for Calabar in Cross River State. The company recently opened its first facility, in Lagos State, which is producing 14 Mgy, and with the new facility the company expects to increase total production to 47 Mgy. Alconi, a Spanish-Nigerian venture, is producing ethanol for domestic Nigerian consumption, and export to Ghana and Angola.
Nigerian ethanol consumption recently came into focus late last month when Brazilian state oil giant Petrobras, admitted that it expected to miss its 1 billion gallon export target by 88%, blaming in part a shortfall in Nigerian exports owing to lack of infrastructure for ethanol storage. Ghana and Angola have been in the news more of late owing to jatropha cultivation efforts in both countries.
