Guantanamo Bay US naval base in Cuba converts to biodiesel
In Cuba, the United States Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay will convert to a biodiesel blend. The base, which is cut off from contact with Cuba, has to maintain a landfill which takes in 18,000 gallons per year of waste cooking oil. The Navy purchased a biodiesel processor for the infamous base and terrorist holding center and is producing its own biodiesel which is blended with petrol for the base’s vehicle fleet.
The conversion is the latest in a series of high profile biodiesel conversions, which include the Jaws ride at Universal Orlando, the state of Maryland’s highway snowplows, and New Hampshire’s Sunapee ski resort.
Last month, fleets in Helsinki, New Hampshire, San Antonio, Somerville (Mass.), Palm Beach county (Fla.) and Thailand announced biodiesel trials and conversions, a total of more than 700 buses.
