New solid-catalyst process reduces biodiesel production cost by up to 25 percent; start-up developer has received queries representing 30 percent of world production capacity
In Iowa, Catalin has received queries from producers representing 30 percent of global biodiesel capacity, seeking information about its microscopic, solid catalysts that could reduce production costs by as much as 25 cents per gallon. The microscopic spheres replace the need to use sodium methoxide, strong acids and water in the biodiesel production process. Also, the catalytic spheres are recovered and reused.
Benefuel and Seymour Biofuels announced last week they will invest $25 million to build a solid-catalyst biodiesel plant in Seymour. The 10 Mgy plant will commence operation in 20101, and will be operated by Seymour Biofuels.
