In South Africa, construction has begun on a Sasol Solvents 26 Mgy ethanol plant that will be completed in September 2008. Krupp Uhde South Africa is leading construction efforts.
Sasol has stated that it does not feel biodiesel development is viable in South Africa without government support, and reportedly wished to delay its project until the South African government announced its program. The government has not indicated when it would outline its biofuels goals. However, the IBSA group (India, Brazil and South Africa) is holding talks this week at the head of state level and on the agenda are biofuels.
