Idaho ethanol plant to reopen; shut since 2004; production to increase to 15 Mgy

In Idaho, the Idaho Ethanol Processing plant reopened in Caldwell. The plant, which closed in 2004, makes 1.5 Mgy of ethanol, and will be expanded by new owners Westway Holdings to produce 15 Mgy.

The reopening comes as six plants in the US and Australia have been idled by low ethanol prices, biodiesel plants in Asia were idled by high palm oil prices, and biodiesel plants in Europe were idled by dumping practices by US exporters.
Last week in Idaho, Biorefinery Partners advanced to a second round with the Department of Energy loan guarantee program for cellulosic ethanol production. The Shelley, Idaho plant would produce 18 Mgy of ethanol from straw from barley, rice, wheat, corn stover, and switchgrass.
