Infrared device can increase yield from corn ethanol by up to eight percent by spotting high-yield corn

A infrared device used at Hawkeye Renewables and 20 other ethanol plants measures ethanol yield from corn and provides a yield report to local farmers on and plants.  The device compares the spectrum of the analyzed corn against the spectrum of proven high-yield corn. Executives said that using high-yield corn can improve productivity by up to eight percent.

Corn ethanol yields have increased from 2.2 to up to 2.8 gallons per bushel in recent years, and corn productivity has increased to nearly 156 bushels per acre, up from 125 in baselines used for studies of corn ethanol yield.
