Australia should keep closed to US ethanol, minister says

In Australia, the New South Wales Government Regional Development Minister said that Australia should keep its as-yet uncompetitive ethanol market closed to US ethanol exports.  Australian Prime Minister and US President George Bush have been engaged in energy talks, prompting speculating that Australia would be opened to US ethanol exports. The US currently protects its domestic industry with an 54-cent per gallon ethanol tariff. Brazil’s entry into the New Zealand market has caused the cancellation of local production projects.
