2007 Oil Independence Report: Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa to become net energy exporters
August 22, 2007
Biofuels Digest has analyzed the latest figures on gasoline fuel consumption and ethanol fuel production and prepared its 2007 Oil Independence Report, by US state. The report is based on the production capacity of current ethanol plants and plants under construction (source: American Coalition for Ethanol) and state-by-state gasoline consumption figures (source: US Department of Energy).
Upon completion of plants currently under construction, Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa will produce more ethanol fuel than each state consumes in gasoline fuel. Ethanol production is equivalent to 260 percent, 217 percent and 189 percent of their annual gasoline fuel consumption, respectively.
The next closest state to “oil independence” is North Dakota, which produces ethanol fuel equivalent to 68 percent of the state’s annual gasoline fuel consumption. Kansas, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Idaho round out the top ten.
Tennessee, Ohio, Colorado, Washington, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Wyoming, Texas and New Mexico hold the next ten spots in the ranking. In all, 26 states do not have any ethanol fuel production capacity or plants under construction. Ventures in many of these states are in the feasibility or financing stage, while biodiesel ventures are also in production or under construction underway in several states.
The United States as a whole has 12.36 million gallons of ethanol in production or scheduled from plants under construction. This total represents 8.9% of the national gasoline consumption based on the figures of the Department of Energy.
