In today’s producer news, Indonesia, soon to become world’s major palm oil exporter, is projecting output to grow sharply throughout 2007 while tapering off in 2008 due to the effect of stricter environmental controls on producers. In Montreal, a company announced the launch of biofuel pellets which can be burned in place of coal to generate electricity.
In research news, a new article has appeared in England on the potential for biofuels derived from the jatropha bush and the USDA has released a study on the potential for biodiesel produced from peanut oil.
In policy news, in Washington DC and across the country, debate continues over whether the current government support of ethanol is reflective of its real potential or simply political pork barrel projects, while producers and consumers continue to argue over whether corn prices are rising due to biofuels and whether higher prices are a good thing.
In international news, the European Union has lifted land-use restrictions in order to provide more land for biofuel production as it gears up to meet its 10% biofuels target by 2020. In Japan, a leading brewer has announced plans to use the beer production residues as an ethanol feedstock. Today, BQ-9000 certification for biodiesel was awarded for the first time to a Canadian company. In Taiwan, the first sales of biodiesel are underway.
In demand-side news, Athens Transit of Georgia announced a conversion of its fleet to biodiesel for a total conversion cost of under $10,000 while reducing the cost of fuel by $600,000 per year.

In today’s producer news, a 120 million gallon biodiesel plant has just come online in Florida , while an ethanol plant scheduled to open in New Mexico has been cancelled following an unfavorable feasibility study. Meanwhile, heavy summer rain has led to higher ethanol prices throughout the Midwest.
In research news, a report from Global Insight predicts that by 2030, world demand for bioethanol will reach 80 billion gallons, and world demand for biodiesel will reach over 20 billion gallons.
In policy news, the Wilmington (Delaware) News has concluded that neither rhyme nor reason prompted the US Senate to pass a bill calling for 36 billion gallons of ethanol; they simply wanted to exceed President Bush’s previously announced 35 billion gallon target for publicity reasons. In Washington DC, Senators and Representatives are debating who should get the credit for the biofuels components of the 2007 Farm Bill passed last Friday.
In international news, biodiesel production in Germany has reached an all-time high but having lost its tax-exempt status in January, the industry is facing a new biofuel tax that will take effect. Meanwhile, Trinidad has issued a plan to use methanol to produce electricity, while a $300 million ethanol pipeline is being studied for Brazil.
In demand-side news, Construction contractors for Microsoft’s new 500,000 square foot Texas data center have switched to biodiesel to solve health and safety issues at the site.

In today’s producer news, a new ethanol plant has been announced in Illinois and a methanol plant in Puerto Rico. A New England-based producer has announced a new product that converts toxic emissions of fixed, fossil fuel powered electric power generators into biodiesel and ethanol feedstocks.
In research news, an Oregon State University study stated that biofuels adoption would reduce Oregon’s fossil fuel usage by only one percent, and be 6 to 15 times as costly as tax incentives aimed at curbing gasoline usage.
In policy news, former New York City Mayor and Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani called for more investment in ethanol as a part of his national energy strategy, while Florida House Republican leader Marco Rubio blasted Republican Governor Charlie Crist for his Florida biofuels initiatives. Crist meanwhile received outspoken support from Florida Democratic leaders.
In international news, a proposal was introduced in India calling for the petroleum industry to purchase up to five percent of the Indian ethanol production to shore up the slumping Indian sugar industry. A new algae biodiesel joint venture to produce biodiesel from algae has been announced in Portugal, while a biodiesel plant will also be constructed in Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta.
Richard Branson and famed high-tech venture capitalist Vinod Khosla announced their investments in the start-up Gevo, which will produce advanced biofuels such as butanol.
In demand-side news, Marathon announced that it will begin selling B2 and B11 biodiesel blends at two of its Illinois terminals. Marathon has been selling soy-based biodiesel in Minnesota and Kentucky since 2005. Meanwhile, General Motors kicked off its E85 Days of summer program this week with promotion stops at ethanol stations in several cities in Texas.

In today’s producer news, the University of Florida has announced that it will continue to proceed in a controversial ethanol research venture and is considering proposals from several private sector partners …. biofuel plants have started production in Iowa and Mississippi and a co-op project is underway in Wisconsin …. a new project in Texas has been announced, and projects in Nebraska and South Carolina detailed new financing arrangements while an Iowa project has filed for an IPO.
In research news, DuPont is opening a biodiesel research facility in Kansas … and PetroSun is conducting a algae-to-biodiesel production demonstration in Georgia.
In policy news, biofuels mandate HR2210 has become law in Oregon …. while the US Senate passed an increase in renewable fuels standard (RFS) to 36 billion gallons by 2022.

Zimbabwe farmers have begun planting large amounts of biodiesel feedstock jatropha ….
