The Last Frontier: Brazil ships first ethanol to Antartica

January 12, 2012 |

In Antarctica, Petrobras is supplying 350,000 liters of Brazilian ethanol to power the Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station, making it the first country to use biofuel to power the frozen continent. Petrobras will follow up with tests to see how the fuel behaves in extreme weather conditions.

The country’s defense minister says the move to power the station with ethanol is part of Brazil’s focus on the UN’s International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.
