The match-up: It’s an Algae Behemoth vs Algae Upstart. Sapphire Energy took 65 percent of the votes in its first round battle with Mendel Biotechnologies. OriginOil upset #6 seed Genencor, winning 56-44.

Sapphire remains at the forefront of the race to produce commercial fuels from microalgae, and it aiming to complete its 1 million gallon demonstration farm by 2014.

OriginOil, an algae-to-fuels technology developer that has recently acquired a hot new customer in MBD Energy, in Australia, for its algal growth and extraction systems.
