UK approves two 299MW biomass power projects

August 11, 2011 |

In the UK, the government has approved two new 299MW biomass-powered plants for Drax, one of the country’s largest power producers, but the company says the ultimate decision whether or not to make the investment depends on what level the government sets biomass power subsidies at. The government is expected to open a consultation regarding the subsidy program shortly. The company says that under the right conditions, it could convert half of its power generation to biomass within four years. Currently low levels of support means Drax’s current biomass-fired power plant is only running at 80% capacity.
