IEA Bioenergy is a Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP), functioning within a framework created by the International Energy Agency (IEA). IEA Bioenergy comprises a world-wide network of experts in every aspect of the value chain of biomass for energy, who are from the research community, institutions of higher education, government agencies and industry. Our mission is to increase knowledge and understanding of bioenergy systems in order to facilitate the commercialisation and market deployment of environmentally sound, socially acceptable, and cost-competitive bioenergy systems and technologies, and to advise policy and industrial decision makers accordingly.

Clariant is a globally leading specialty chemicals company, based in Muttenz, Switzerland. Clariant’s Group Biotechnology has developed the sunliquid process which uses enzymatic hydrolysis followed by fermentation to efficiently and sustainably produce cellulosic ethanol from agricultural residues such as wheat straw, corn stover or sugarcane bagasse. Clariant has been operating Germany’s largest cellulosic ethanol plant in Straubing since 2012. In September 2017, Clariant signed its first license agreement for sunliquid® with Enviral, the largest producer of bioethanol in Slovakia, which will produce cellulosic ethanol at an annual production capacity of 50 000 tons. In October that same year, Clariant decided to invest in a new full-scale commercial plant based on its sunliquid technology in Romania.

In 2018, the LCFC is working to establish a Clean Fuel Standard in Washington state, and is hosting an event to foster new low carbon fuel standard policies world-wide at the Global Climate Action Summit.
